Thousand Oaks has become a populous city which balances residential and business communities amid oak trees and over 14,000 acres of open space, offering homeowner excellent real estate opportunities, civic involvement, numerous amenities and a much more.

The attentiveness of the residents to their homes is a good indication of their efforts and involvement within the community. homeowners are not only active with development and environmental issues, but they encourage participation in the schools, crime prevention, recreation and arts. This effort is noticed in distinguished school scores, low crime, and an overall safe, active community atmosphere. Thousand Oaks is continually ranked as one of the safest places in the U.S to live.

Thousand Oaks, the city usually places first or second in the annual contest of the safest city with over 100,000 residents in the United States. (In the 1999 FBI report, Thousand Oaks placed second to Simi Valley.)

Performing Arts Center where regional theater companies in California mount impressive productions. In 2000, the city council approved a civic center project which will create a 12 screen movie-plex, restaurants, stores, a science center and a pond.

Academic scores are high, with many schools scoring in the 9Oth percentiles, the top 10 percent in the state of California. Served by the Conejo Unified School District, enrollment is about 23,000. In the past few years the school district has had many high points in its success including receiving an $88 million bond to renovate all schools and build performing arts centers at Thousand Oaks High and Newbury Park High, gyms for the middle schools and another school (with many of these projects currently completed or under development) and the receipt of a national Blue Ribbon for academic excellence at Redwood Middle School in 2000. Currently a branch campus of Moorpark Community College is also in development.

One of the more dynamic areas of the region, the Conejo Valley has attracted many professionals and some high-tech businesses. Many local jobs are to be found at large firms such as Amgen, GTE, Dole Foods, State Farm, and the Rockwell Science Center.

Thousand Oaks History

According to local lore, Thousand Oaks got its name in the 1920s when a developer held a contest to name the area. Because Oak trees abound in the Conejo Valley, a lad suggested "Thousand Oaks."  He won and although the development never amounted to much, the name stuck.

Thousand Oaks Housing

Thousand Oaks is the first city west of the Los Angeles County Line, and has some of the finest homes in Southern California. Governed by a master zoning plan which allows for a balance between nature and development, residents find convenient access to roads, natural trails, a lake, stores and a mall within a short drive. In Thousand Oaks, many tracts are surrounded by walls. This design shunts the heavy traffic onto arterial streets and away from residential streets. Housing ranges from modest three bedroom, two bath homes in the earliest city neighborhoods, to upscale housing (some with orchards), many built as equestrian properties. But regardless of the type property, neighborhoods maintain a comfortable feeling with attractive homes in close proximity to the pastoral backdrop which has made Thousand Oaks so popular.

Thousand Oaks Nature

Thousand Oaks is named for the thousands of oak trees growing in the rolling hills amidst wild grass pastures, lush and green after the spring rains and turning a golden yellow during the warmer months. The "official thousand" trees have little brass tags attached to their trunks. The elevation at the floor of the valley is about a thousand feet, and the surrounding mountains rise to about three thousand feet.
